POLAND SUED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION OVER AIR POLLUTION

12/14/2015

The European Commission is taking Poland to court due to Poland’s inability to tackle poor air quality. Poland is Europe’s most polluted country, with pollution levels more than double those in France. More than 40,000 Poles die each year due to air pollution. Poland uses coal and, on occasion, garbage to heat the country’s homes. South Poland, near the ski resort towns, feels the effects stronger than the rest of the country due to local neglect of environmental rules. The EC explained that Poland consistently has high levels of dust particles in the air, which causes a large risk to public health, and stated that “the legislative and administrative measures taken so far to limit this persisting non-compliance have been deemed insufficient.” The case was referred to the European Union’s Court of Justice. Concurrently, the EC is pursuing infringement actions against 16 other member states, including Germany, Spain, and Sweden, for excessive fine dust levels and has previously brought a case against Bulgaria. For the full story, see http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-eu-poland-environment-idUKKBN0TT1RF20151210
