CHINA’S WAR ON POLLUTION MOVES BEYOND COAL-POWERED ELECTRICITY

Last week, China announced its intent to limit coal production during the warmer months as part of the country’s efforts to tackle air pollution. Now, in order to cut smog during the colder months, Beijing has ordered steel producers, aluminum producers, and pesticides manufacturers to cut their production partially or completely in the winter. In China’s 28 most polluted cities, all pesticides production plants that use volatile organic compounds will be shut down during the winter (though allowed to function at normal capacity during the spring and planting seasons); aluminum production, which is mostly powered by coal, must be cut by more than 30%; and steel producers will have to reduce their output by as much as half in some cities. For the full story, see http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-china-pollution-idUKKBN1683G6 and http://uk.reuters.com/article/us-china-petrochemical-idUKKBN16A0ZY.
