BRAZILIAN RAINFOREST SOYBEAN PRODUCTION MORATORIUM EXTENDED INDEFINITELY

05/16/2016

The Brazilian Ministry, the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oils Industry, Brazil's National Association of Grain Exporters, the Soy Working Group, and Greenpeace signed an indefinite moratorium on rainforest clearing for soybean production. A 2006 agreement, prompted by a Greenpeace campaign, banned rainforest clearing for soybean production but required renewing annually. Greenpeace emhpasized that although soy production is increasing, only 0.8% of the expansion involves newly deforested areas. The new agreement will allow Brazil to participate in the global market while keeping soy cultivation forest-friendly. Prior to the 2006 agreement, soy was a major cause of deforestation in the region; since 2004, forest clearing has decreased by 80%.
