Statute Outline
The statute abolishes the Atomic Energy Commission and establishes the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. [42 U.S.C. §§5814(a), 5841(a)(1)]
Any director or responsible officer of a firm that constructs, owns, or operates a facility or activity regulated under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 (AEA) who obtains information concerning a violation of the AEA or its regulations or concerning a defect that could create a substantial safety hazard shall notify the Commission of such failure or defect. Knowing failure to notify the Commission gives rise to a civil penalty. [42 U.S.C. §5846(a), (b)]
