United States v. BP Exploration & Production

A settling CWA and OPA defendant must pay a $5.5 billion civil penalty under the CWA, must pay $8.1 billion for natural resource damages under the OPA plus up to $700 million additional for unknown conditions and adaptive management, must pay $350 million for state and federal natural resource damages assessment costs, and must pay $250 million in other federal cost in connection with the discharge of oil into the Gulf of Mexico following the Macondo Well blowout in April 2010.
